CHAIR ON CHAIR by Faiz Ahmad

that is not this chair

chewing the chair

from all sides

you stay seated

working through theorems

and smiling at your

empirical uniqueness every

once in a while,

oblivious of the chair’s

cosmic ordeal

now the chair

has been eaten away

into invisibility

and a verb

yet you stay as

you were,

sitting on nothing,

your body shaped

like a chair –

too loud and

conspicuous for

anyone’s taste

Faiz Ahmad is a final-year student pursuing his Bachelors-Masters in Biological Sciences, IIT Madras. He believes in poetry as the ground of bewilderment, of amazement at simply ‘being.’ His poems have been published in Salamander, Storm cellar, Off the Coast, Anima and others.
